Edible Atom Project

Day one:

go to: webelements.com and choose an element. We cannot have repeats, and you must choose an element you have not yet studied. When you know what you want, let Mrs. McLeod know! Once you choose, you may not change - so be careful!

Once you have your element, start gathering data:

1. Draw a picture with the correct number to protons, neutrons, electrons and rings.
2. What are the interesting properties of your element? (Does it react with other elements? how does it behave chemically? what does it look like when it is pure?, etc)
3. What are the uses of your element? Is it rare or abundant? Where can it be found?
4. Who discovered your element? When was it discovered and how?

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY:
Make a yummy visual aide! You can earn 10 extra points on your assignment if you bring in an edible replica of your atom. Here are the rules:

1. The portions need to be small! Depending on how many people do this extra credit, we may have A LOT of food. You need to bring equipment to cut your atom, or make small atoms that can be given out to people. Make sure you have enough to feed 22, but give everyone a quarter slice/portion.

2. You need to take everything home that day - anything left with me will be thrown away.

3. You get 5 extra points if it is healthy! :)

4. To get the points, your atom must have the correct number of electrons, neutrons, and protons!
